Though not begun until 1926, the grounds at Anglesey already deserve to be famous, for they are the grandest made in England during the 20th century. Majestic avenues and 35 acres of fine turf are the stuff of them: visit Anglesey when the horse-chestnuts are out and tulips glow among cowslips in the wildflower meadows. Large formal gardens, carved out of the flat site by yew hedges, house the 1st Lord Fairhaven's collection of classical and renaissance sculpture. The winter garden bursts with snowdrops and aconites, coloured stems and glistening evergreens. Then there are smaller gardens, said to be more intimate, where thousands of dahlias and hyacinths hit the eye: glorious or vainglorious, Anglesey has no match.
