Hydrangea Hydrangea is a genus of more than 70 species of evergreen and deciduous shrubs and climbers. They are grown for their spectacular, large flowers, borne in spherical, umbrella-shaped or conical inflorescences. The colour of the flowers varies, depending on the soil pH. Hence, flowers are blue in acid soils, cream-coloured in neutral soils and pink or fuchsia in alkaline soils. They grow in full sun or part shade, in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soils. Plant groups and in flowerpots. Propagated by semi-woody cuttings from non flowering stems in spring and summer. Most species require light pruning in winter and removal of overmature inflorescences.
